Rated PG 8/29/2010 is inspired by Sam Tsui's Michael Jackson Medley

In an astounding effort to challenge Party Pilipinas, ASAP XV is now coming up with performances with wow vocals. Yesterday, as I was switching channels I chanced upon the performance of Gary Valenciano and the other great male vocalists from ASAP. Here's a video I found on Youtube.com

Then, as I scanned through the comments given below, I saw that this performance could have been inspired by yet another Youtube sensation by the name of Sam Tsui. Sam Tsui, recorded separately his different voices and combined them in one single video file to come up with this awesome, jaw-dropping performance:

Wasn't that just indescribable?

Well, I still believe in the power of the vocals of Jed Madella, Erik Santos, PDA's Bugoy, and Gary Valenciano (plus the other guy I do not know).

Whatever the truth is, let us be satisfied that we were entertained by both videos.

stop it please, major major: the Manila hostage version

"The police should have done this...."
"The media should not have aired the hostage crisis...."
"The driver should not have left the bus...."

Blame.
Fingers.
Put them together and we end up with nothing at all.

Countless authorities from both the private and the public sectors who claim that the various forces - media, police, Capt. Mendoza, the driver, which amalgamated and ended up as the Manila Hostage situation - have lots of things to say about this crisis. I will no longer name what they have said because it just irks me more.

Question:

Where were you during the 10-hour long crisis?
Why did you not say anything during the duration of the crisis?
Now that you have so much to say and it shows that you have easy access to media, why did you keep mum during the hostage taking?
Why did you not mention that media should not be airing the hostage taking live?
Why Maria Ressa did you say that the crisis would end up similarly even if they delayed the broadcast of the hostage crisis?
Why are non-government organizations, concerned with media responsibility and peace keeping, now saying so much about what media should have done in that event?

Be done with all this evaluative statements of what the police and media should have done.
Sometimes it makes me think, as a thinking group of people, are we Filipinos only good at one thing - to blame people when a crisis is all said and done?

stop it please, major major

major, major |ˈmājər ˈmājər|
(adjective)

1. (attribute) more major than major
2. a probable translation of the Filipino term bonggang bongga

Etymology: coined from Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner Up, in her final answer to the question "What's one big mistake that you've made in your life and what did you do to make it right? "

I've had a serious overdose of this term since the time Venus Raj has immortalized the word "major" and made it a key term in making conversations funnier and more enjoyable. Yeah, major major.

Factions have been formed by Filipinos and fans of Miss Universe alike ranging from those who praise Venus for her wonderful performance to those who think that she's Miss Perfect but has not answered the question properly to those who are dismayed over her poor performance. Much has been said by local and international media about her answer, which are most of the time defending how difficult the question she had to answer. Therefore, I shall no longer discuss this.

What I want to talk about here is how serious sometimes Filipinos are when it comes to proper English grammar usage. Come on now. Why do we easily accept that artists and celebrities -  both English native and non-native speakers - may commit mistakes when speaking in English, except if the artist or celebrity is Filipino? In fact when a Filipino pronounces a word incorrectly or completes a sentence which is grammatically incorrect we laugh and we judge that person right away.

Lots of Filipino celebrities have had their own stupid, "bobo" moments and we just can't seem to get enough of laughing at their mistakes and making the grammatical error the Flavor of the Week or the Flavor of the Month or a Classic Supreme joke such as Melanie Marquez's "long-legged" and "Don't judge my brother. He is not a book."

Being a real second language to most Filipinos and, to some even, their first language, English is expected to be used with much confidence and competency that we can converse with a native English speaker with little or no difficulty at all. And if it becomes difficult for us to converse in English, people measure our intelligence and thinking capacity just because we cannot utter the proper words or aspirate our t's and d's.

Come on now, major major.

Let us put an end to this false correlation that wideness of English vocabulary and intelligence in English grammar and word usage equate to a more intelligent, more critical student or person.

Yeah, you know how to use the language well but if your going to answer stupidly like how Sarah Palin did, then I might as well be an average non-native English speaker than to be a fluent, native-sounding speaker who can't think for himself and will just converse properly when a script is on hand.

Leave this country, alien abusers

I don't know but I am secretly happy that there is a travel ban to our country. Leave you aliens who keep on abusing our resources and our people. Go back to your filthy first world nations.

Police Brutality and Media Insanity

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Journalism which I am most proud of, having been trained by the best professors I could have from the media industry such as Prof. Luis Teodoro, Prof. Chit Simbulan, Prof. Rachel Khan, Prof. Crysta Rara, and Prof. Elena Pernia (who I met in a recent seminar where she was the speaker).

Several of them have mentioned and discussed the gatekeeping powers of media and have stressed out the other powers that media organizations and those working for these organizations hold.

We are all witnesses to the extreme hold and influence that media have. For the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in advertising time for shows. In fact, there are no regular and fixed program time slots now. There might be an actual flow of the programs per day but the time dedicated for each show is, unlike the past decades, not  fixed anymore. Before we would still hear from what time to what time this particular program will air; now, all we get is this program will air after this program. This is so because advertisers treat broadcast media as channels for selling. In turn, the media forget that their information-giving and opinion-building natures are being sacrificed because of the profit-driven nature of several media organizations.

Despite the presence of media regulation bodies such as the seemingly defunct Movies and Television Review and Classfication Board and the prestigious Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (whereI interned), media organizations can easily throw away their social responsiblity for profit increase.

Media organizations could easily say that they fulfill their duties with such ardor that they cannot be accused of being money hoarders and not information disseminators. Yes, we can see this in the most recent reports on police brutality and how lowly and undignified some members of the police force can be. I need not discuss anything more about this brutality for much has been said already, I am sure. Because that is the nature of the world - when it is trending, let us all talk about it.

I do not oppose this, as multiplicity of voices is key to peace, if all sides are going to air their sides properly. But for me, the media, which they should partly perform, need to inform the people beyond what the surface offers. Surface tension is pretty obvious - and I am being quite absurd here - and focusing on the different reports of the same nature is like eating various ice cream brands of the same ice cream flavor.

What media should do is to properly distinguish at which point should they stop reporting on the same thing and discuss more about the roots of the several issues and problems that are little by little being revealed by the present administration.
More than ever, this is the time when media need to be extra vigilant with issues that affects our human day-to-day function: the intrapersonal, the social, the emotional, the mental, the political, the financial, and the cultural aspect of our lives.

We have had an overdose of sensational celebrity news. A good number of the masses are already celebrity news obese but important issues lean. We need a balanced issues diet.

a different side of me

I haven't been myself lately, having to go through so many challenges this week both at work and at home. But nevertheless, I maintain sanity by writing poems. Here's the most recent one I wrote. Enjoy.

If you wanna be rich, better read this.

This entry I am telling and dedicating to myself more than to you, my dear reader.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to live a luxurious life. Come on. Who does not desire comfort and luxury? Well, I am speaking for myself here so, yeah, if you are do not desire these things, I am cool with that.

Anyway, I've been acquiring pretty much everything that I have always dreamt of having. I'll blog about that some other time. But I must admit I just can't get enough. I always still need to satiate that desire of luxury -  to be a millionaire.

Secrets have been told time and again. Myths have been shared as well but not much.

I chanced upon this material from Yahoo! Finance that somehow opened my eyes more and convinced me that what others say about how to become rich is for real.

Well check this out. Hopefully you'll get more convinced too. And hopefully, will get richer afterwards. Sigh

Because this routinely lived life is so boring...

In an attempt to keep our lives more interesting - despite the intricacies and what nots that come with living this life - humans have found trivial ways to do just about that. One of them is to solve puzzles.

I know this may be of great importance to some because solving puzzles (I for one solve crossword puzzles) is, as they always say, a means of improving logic and sharpening one's faculty of logic.

Well I just did not really reckon that there would be a group of people who would try to solve the mysteries of a puzzle  -the Rubik's cube.

They have recently released the magic number of the Rubik's cube. To read more about this, click this link.

Alanis, Jessica, and Shake Shake Shampoo: things from the 90s era I wish were back or resurrected

I am a child of the 90s.

It is not exactly a happy decade for the Philippines considering that it was during this decade when several natural and man-made calamities and disasters engulfed the country's resources, such as the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the tremendously strong earthquake that destroyed many parts of northern, central, and southern Luzon, the super typhoons Rosing (1995) and Loleng (1998), the Asian currency crisis, and of course the election of former President Joseph Estrada into office, along side the election of former President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo as his Vice President which would then usher us to one of the worst recent decades in the country's history.

But let bygones be bygones. Alas, I find myself looking back to those days when cellular phones were like ice shavers, when landline party lines were a big issue in households, when telephone booths were as precious as the cellphones nowadays, when the cheapest internet connection was 30-35 pesos per hour, when the buses along EDSA are like individual cab units of MRT and LRT now, and so much more.

The 90s may not exactly be one of the best decades in terms of political and business criteria, but there are things from this era which I had been wishing were back, resurrected, or has an existing counterpart in this millennium's fast-pased, DSL-driven world. Some of them are here:

Jagged Little Pill1. Alanis Morissette - To those who are not familiar to her (which I doubt), Alanis is like the Taylor Swift-slash-Avril Lavigne of our generation. Her album Jagged Little Pill - which is considered according to Wikipedia.com as the highest selling debut album of all time - made Alanis, 21 at the time of awarding, the youngest artist during that time to receive the Grammy's Album of the Year award (until Taylor Swfit beat her to winning the same award at age 20). Alanis's songs live up to this very day. It is not only the kids of the 90s who find themselves singing along the great hits such as Ironic, Hand in my Pocket, and You Oughta Know. Who would forget these words, accompanied by great melody: "It's like rain on your wedding day. It's a free ride when you've already paid...."; "And what it all comes down to, is that everything's gonna be quite all right..."; "And every time you speak her name does she know that you told me you'd hold me until you died, until you died, but you're still alive...." Who would forget these words ever? Alanis, please be back with an album like this. (or maybe not)

Twisted 2. Jessica Zafra - Her dark humor has installed her name into the literary world of our country. "Who would right about the most mundane things" (to quote colleague Arlene Manalang) such as riding buses or eating breakfast, or falling in line for the ATM? Who would write about the weirdest things such as OFWs taking over the world, or manananggal in the city, or the art of being dedma? Only Jessica Zafra would do this. I remember her Twisted articles being used in my English 10 class and some Creative Writing classes in UP. She is one of a kind. I am sad now though that her column in The Philippine Star are like reviews only. Ms. Zafra, please talk about the things you talked about in your previous collections? I personally miss the sarcasm and the dark humor.

STREETBOYS 3. Streetboys and other dance groups - Despite the "jologs-ness"of the elephant pants and oversized shirts, I'd have to admit that I waited for the latest choreography and dance steps that Streetboys, Universal Motion Dancers (UMD) or Maneuvers would come up with and then perform it on stage in our own school presentations or barangay fiestas. Although they are still around, the craze over simple dance steps becoming a thing for everyone has little by little lost its appeal to the public. It seems now that if one cannot breakdance, one is not considered a great or admirable dancer. I just miss those days when dancers were graceful, whether male or female; straight or otherwise.

4. Morning kiddie shows - Back then, my peers and I would all be looking forward and waiting for vacation season because it was this time when we got to watch the shows that make us all cry: Sarah, Ang Munting Prinsesa, Cedy, Ang Munting Prinsipe, Remy, The Dog of Flanders and many more. These shows were a way for us to learn certain values which allowed us to become better people. Teenagers nowadays don't get to watch shows like this. I wish they'd play them again. Who would forget Miss Minchin? We even had a game about Princess Sarah. It goes something like... "Miss Amelia, takot sa pusa (afraid of cats), Miss Minchin mukhang pera (worldy person)."

5. Weekend street games - To train ourselves to become tough, to remain fit, and at the same time to enjoy weekend mornings, the 90s kids played a lot of games which involved a lot of strategy, strength, and stamina (not to mention sour sweat) such as: Shake, Shake Shampoo; Langit, Lupa; Monkey, Monkey Annabelle; Manga, manga; and so many other games. All these games were played with one kid being the it. His/her task is to touch or catch someone else who would become it. These games trained us sportsmanship and at the same time has allowed us to become, in our own respect, lawmakers.  I remember when my friends would give out all the rules before the game started and there would be others who would appeal and question the logic of the rules. This is probably why many of my peers and contemporaries are very creative and are little by little dominating various scenes in the entertainment industry. Anyhow, let me not fail to mention the games we called Text and Pog.

Beverly Hills, 90210 - The Complete First Season 6. Beverly Hills and the other US series - I know this might be colonialism but hey I enjoyed watching as a kid shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Baywatch, Party of Five, Seventh Heaven (which made it to the new millennium), Charmed (also made it to the 21st century), and Early Edition. I just miss watching shows that made sense and do not just show female and male sexy bodies, but actually had a real story. Well, some are trying to be revived like 90210 but these shows are unique and may probably be not reborn anymore.

I know that the 90s kids or people did not have the best fashion sense (oversized shirts and pants, bandanas, bad-ass, grunge look, wedges, boots, tucked in polos coupled with 501s) but the 90s ushered in so many things in the popular culture scene which until this very day I wish I savored more.

got picked up

No, not while in a party but while in class.

As a result of over-fatigue and a cornucopia of stress, my students awhile ago tried out some pickup lines which I heard for the first time. Yeah, loser. Fine. But I have to admit, I loved every single pickup line.

Here are some of them.

Geometric Smile
"Sir, magaling ka ba sa geometry?" (Sir are you good in geometry?)
"Why?"
"Kasi kahit saang anggulo ang gwapo mo eh!" (Coz at whatever angle of your face, you look good!)
WIDE SMILE.

Not Made in China
"Sir, patingin?" (Sir, may I take a look?) Checks the tag on the collar of my shirt.
DUMBFOUNDED.
"Sabi na eh Made in Heaven!" (Right! Made in Heaven!)
WIDE SMILE.

Death wish
"Sir sana mamatay ka na lang." (I wish you dead, Sir)
"Excuse me?!?"
"Para ikaw na lang angel mo." (So that you'd be my angel)

That's what I love about students. I can be stressed out and sleep-deprived but when their childlikeness creeps in, such as moments like this, you just can't help but laugh out loud with them to relieve yourselves of all kinds of tension.

Thanks ladies.

looking back

Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!
I remember reading this book when I was in first year college - the time when I was struggling to be accepted by my peers despite my weight (I'll talk about this some other time). Apart from this struggle, family problems and dysfunctional matters in my life dawned on me that the best escape was to just lock myself in my room.

On the verge of suicide, I had to find ways to cope with all these stressors. I didn't want to die 200 lbs. heavy. I have got to do something about this, I told myself.

The book above was of great help that time. I was able to challenge myself to be always positive and to stay stable even when everything in my life is on the rocks. Of course, God was of great help. Help and support from my two sisters and my mom was a great dosage of upper as well.

I couldn't find my copy of this book anymore. But I guess the title is the mantra now.

Just hang in there. The cliff is not exactly excited to let you go. Whatever.

shovels and forks

The beginning of the rainy season has somehow provided a time to be more dramatic and melancholic about the various occurrences in our lives. Listening to music like Hide And Seek of Imogen Heap is heavenly these days; an escape.

For myself, more particularly, I have made this season a time to ponder on issues in my life that would gravely affect my future.

Digging deep into myself, I have come to realize that I am getting and growing older but some of my dreams have not yet been fulfilled. I am in a rush; I admit that. I feel that my heart disease is

I am one too complicated to understand; that's what I always tell myself. I really confuse everyone, even myself. Sometimes, I feel this; at other times, I feel that. I am killing myself with all these work I am doing in my life.

Fork roads face me. To follow my principles and continue living this way or to give some principles up and lead a different lifestyle? To do a tiring, non-routine job or to do a just-go-to-work-and-go-home-without-worrying-about-the-next-workday kind of job?

A student has commented on this blog and told me to think about what my old self would think of. I am suddenly reminded of a Charmed - The Complete Fifth Season episode where Phoebe (Allysa Milano) was deciding if she'd marry Cole. With the help of magick, Phoebe called her future and past selves. And this helped her decide somehow what she would do in her life.

How I wish I could do this now. But, alas, Hollywood is much more interesting and more powerful than my life. I guess I just have to decide on whatever is daunting on me now and just face the consequences. After all, a life that's linear is not exactly exciting.

In celebration of the Month of the Filipino Language

I recently found out through the View My Stats that I have readers as far as Sweden, Canada, and USA.

I am sorry if my recent posts are written in Filipino. I will only be doing this month of August as we celebrate our language every August.

But I might be posting blogs from time to time written in English in order that I may give satisfaction to my non-Filipino readers as well. Thank you.

Panasadiyaw: Mga Pananaw, Mga Sayaw, Isang Diwa

Siyang tunay,

Nag-tweet si Ellen de Generes tungkol muli sa kanyang pagkahumaling sa mga talento ng Pinoy at sinabing:

I’ve learned 2 things about TV. It’s always easier with vodka & some of the best singers are from the Philippines.

Life's a Pastiche: Panawagan Para sa ABS-CBN
