The start of 2011 seems to bode ill for Filipinos as bread and public road transport—from jeepney and bus to taxi and light rail transit rides—are expected to cost more.
Bakers on Wednesday said bread prices would go up in the coming weeks if prices of flour and sugar did not go down soon.
In Lapu-Lapu City, where Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc. inaugurated a plant Wednesday, its president said a bread-price increase was imminent because bakers had yet to pass on to consumers the increase in flour and sugar prices from late last year.
“We haven’t passed on to consumers the P20-a-bag increase in the price of flour last year,” said Gardenia president Simplicio Umali Jr.
“But the (Department of Trade and Industry) said President Aquino would be signing soon an executive order removing the tariff on wheat. That should reduce flour prices by around P20 a bag,” Umali said.
Consumers will have to further tighten their belts because train rides will also cost more. MalacaƱang has endorsed fare increases in the Metro Rail Transit (MRT 3) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT 1 and LRT 2)—all in Metro Manila.
